Every digging job requires a call to Iowa One Call, by calling 811 or (800) 292-8989, to have underground lines located.  ANY digging project - large or small - requires a call:

  • Planting trees or hedges
  • Digging ponds or yard water features (fountain)
  • Installing a fence or mailbox
  • Serious building projects (like building a deck)
  • Working with concrete
  • Other excavation work

Dial 811 to have your underground utility lines marked for FREE. Call a minimum of 48 hours in advance to allow time for requests to be processed. The advance notice excludes weekends and legal holidays.

Within 48 hours, a locator will mark the approximate location of your underground lines, pipes and cables, so you’ll know what’s below - and be able to dig safely.  Remember that private lines, such as an underground service between a barn and grain dryer, are not located.  If you have private lines, it is your responsibility to hire a contractor to locate the lines.
