Energy & The Stimulus Package
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a.k.a. the Stimulus Package, includes assistance and incentives for home weatherization, energy efficient upgrades, and renewable energy improvements.
Weatherization Assistance Program
The program is available to households earning up to 200 percent of the poverty level. That's an income of $44,100 for a family of four. Program participants receive:
- A professional energy consultation
- Analysis of energy bills
- Blower-door test to locate air leaks
- Advice on how to be more energy efficient
- Installation of energy upgrades like insulating walls and roofs, sealing air leaks, and installing more efficient heating and cooling systems.
The stimulus package allows for up to $6,500 to be spent on each home.
Here in Iowa, $80.8 million has been designated for the weatherization program. To apply, contact your local community action agency.
